The final stage of my Top End work was two and a half week stint working in Tennant Creek. This was organised by Barkly Regional Arts, with funding from the Coca Cola Foundation. During my stay I worked primarily with groups from the Tennant Creek High School as well as sessions with STEPS training and Youthlinx. I worked closely with Tristan Duggie, a young local teacher and artist to train him in stencil and mural processes. Together with the other participants we were able to complete a number of murals in the town, adding a whole bunch of colour and vibrancy.

The project also included Adelaide artist Nish Cash working in the community for a similar period of time. Here are some shots of an impromptu collaborative wall that we painted together. Big thanks goes out to George and Efsta from the Tennant Creek Emporium who donated wall space to the project.

One of the outcomes of the workshops was a snake mural painted just off of the main drag of Tennant Creek. We were fortunate to have a smaller wall at the rear of STEPS training centre to be able to do a little test run. One of the major outcomes for the Tennant Creek High School Group was a mural for the exterior of the local swimming pool. The underwater theme was an easy choice. We also completed a smaller scale version of this mural at the High School as a bit of a warm up.

During October and November of 2011 I will be travelling throughout Australia's Northern Territory doing a few workshops with community centres and schools. I will be working with Angurugu School on Groote Eylandt, Yirrkala Art Centre in East Arnhem Land and Barkly Arts Centre in Tennant Creek.

Here are a few shots of hanging out with the students at Angurugu, sharing some stencil skills and gearing them up to paint a mural in their school.

I have an exhibition of new work opening Saturday May 7th at Ryan Renshaw Gallery. Here's the spin -

This new body of work is an investigation into the changing nature of Australian patriotism and it's representation. The last decade of Australian politics has seen a number of coming of age moments for our nation, none less visible than the seduction of nationalism. The central motif to all of this is the ever more ubiquitous southern cross and its variants. Flags, apparel, cars and even bodies are emblazoned with this sign of allegiance.
Returning to the economy of stencilled aerosol and drawing, Dodd has created a suite of works that may be at once celebratory and critical. These images are equally at home on the gallery wall as the grimy surfaces of suburbia.

ADELAIDE CITY COUNCIL MURAL COMMISSION

During my 2010 residency in Fremantle I met a bunch of ethusiastic, socially minded people who mentioned that they'd like a mural painted on their street. I was happy to oblige and it's been a long time coming but with a little support from the City of Fremantle I was able to spend a few days working with the Hulbert St community in realising a mural that celebrates all of the awesome things that they do. It was a fantastic project that brought together talent from both young and old and resulted in something that the street can truly own. There are so many great pics but I've had to select only a few to post here...
A huge thanks goes to everyone who contributed to organising, executing, putting me up and generally looking after me!!

PICNIC TABLES - THE NEW NEW

Opening late in October of 2010, the Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia is staging possibly one of the most significant overviews of contemporary SA artists ever to be undertaken. Including 47 artists, numerous sites across Adelaide and a hefty publication this is a project that has been a long time coming.

My contribution to the project is a series of picnic tables that have been altered and placed in both Victoria and Whitmore Squares. They have images of significant Australian paintings from the Art Gallery of South Australia's collection carved into their tops, which double as printing plates. For me, this project is an exploration of the values placed on cultural residues such as graffiti. I find the scratchings on various public furniture to be as engaging as some of the greatest paintings that are in major institutions. I have adapted images from Roberts, Gould and Boyd, each of which portray particular notions of Australian colonialism and social identity that can still be reflected upon today.

One of the tables is to be carved on site, allowing the opportunity to interact with the general public and extend the project via discussion. Viewers are invited to add their initials or names to the surfaces of the tables.

Come along to CCAS to see a solo show of new paintings that I have recently completed.

Graffiti is hardly the first thing that springs to mind when considering the outback- especially when the general public has forgotten what graffiti actually are. They are representative of individuals, their thoughts, motivations and emotions. In this way we can examine the psyche of a place via its public inscriptions. The graffiti that I have interpreted in this work offer us insight into our contemporary Australian outback.
Also showing will be Helen Shelley and James Lieutenant.

BOAB INSCRIPTIONS
RESIDENCY & EXHIBITION AT FREMANTLE ARTS CENTRE

At the beginning of July I will be travelling to Fremantle and the Kimberley to undertake a 3 month artist in residence. This will culminate in a solo exhibition at Fremantle Arts Centre late in September. The project will examine inscriptions left on Boab trees. The trees have a distinctive place in WA history and culture and people have left their marks on them for hundreds of years. One of the unique qualities of these trees is that marks do not grow out of their bark and so it is possible to still read messages written by early explorers, pastoralists and travelers. I am interested in the stories that these marks hold and the way these can be incorporated into a visual art practice.

//Australia’s James Dodd is taking outsider graffiti to a higher brow.//

Jimmy and I met by chance when we were both guest speakers at some insane Belgium street art fest, where there were more artists than punters. It was a strange but interesting weekend and it was one of those meetings where it feels like you’ve known the person forever, which is what friendship is all about: eternity. The only downside to the weekend was the inedible vegan shit masquerading as food. Anyhow… me and Jim hit it off and he very kindly let me into his world. The life of an original artist is one of the most interesting places for a writer.

Now 31, Jimmy used to be one of the most prominent stencil artists in Australia until he gave it all up to go back to uni and study for his Masters of Visual Art. This was an astute move as now his work has all the influences of the street but with the heavy-weight conceptual backing of the art establishment.

What Jimmy does is travel the world collecting scrawls and graffiti (not the street art kind, but the underclass style). He shoots them on a digital camera, and then comes up with a concept – like the time he built a facsimile of a Darwin bus shelter (renowned for being painted with very kitsch sunsets) and used exact copies of the collected scrawls to cover its surfaces. Thus underclass outsider art became high art. I fucking love it.

“I’ve always been attracted to graffiti and to people who do things that they’re not supposed to,” says Jim, from his Adelaide home (‘Adelaide has a slower pace than Melbourne which I prefer at the moment because it means I can get more work done.’)

. “There was even a period when I thought that street art could solve all of the world’s problems - fortunately that’s passed…”

Having spent years knee-deep in the Melbourne stencil scene, Jim knows better than most what he likes and, more importantly, what he don’t: “I’ve decided that most New York/train oriented graf is very derivative,” he says. “As a culture, it often doesn’t support innovation and experimentation. But these are the primary things that I find exciting in all creative endeavours. That’s why I find outsider graffiti so exciting, because it doesn’t adhere to a set of rules and is often unpredictable.”

Right now, Jimmy’s…( So, at the moment, He is developing artwork that uses found scrawl as a component, and is mostly interested in making work that is heavily influenced by street creativity and intervention to be shown in galleries, in the context of informed art discussions. James is also spending some time working on community projects, like teaching Year 8 and 9 classes from Mitcham Girls High in Adelaide stencil techniques and producing material to contribute to a large mural on the outside of the school.

– but in between it all, he’s still looking for those outsider kids who love scrawling on the street: “I look at the streets wherever I go, they remain a constant source of inspiration for me. At the moment, non-disciplined graffiti is the type of stuff that turns me on the most. I want to celebrate this in the art that I am making.”

CRYPTOPHILISTINISM AT CAST, HOBART

During June and July, CAST Gallery in Hobart, Tasmania, will play host to the Cryptophilistinism group exhibition. The show was first presented earlier in 2009 at Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne. It has been curated by Amita Kirpilani and features work by Stuart Bailey, James Dodd, Sarah Goffman, Scott Morrison and Justin Trendall.

This group of paintings extends upon my ongoing investigations into found, handmade marks from the urban environment. Since 2005 the May Lane Art Project has played host to a swag of premium street artists both local and international. This is the second retrospective of panels produced by participating artists, presenting an encyclopaedic account of Australian illicit art, bear witness to more than 30 panels, each 2.4 x 3.6 metres in size. More art than you can poke a marker at!

SUNSET DREAMING AT CACSA PROJECT SPACE

The work in this exhibition is an exaggerated facsimile of bus shelters found in the Darwin area. The majority of these structures that I observed along high traffic roads in Darwin have been painted with murals of regionally specific flora, fauna and landscapes. They have also accumulated layers of scratched, painted and written text and imagery. All of the residues that I have employed in these compositions have been collected from the Top End. The work is somewhat of an attempt at representing the psyche of a physical space via visual interpretation of found text and graffiti.

This exhibition has been made possible with the generous support of the Government of South Australia via Arts SA.

SHEPPARTON STENCIL WORKSHOP

Over the weekend of the 14th & 15th of June I held a workshop teaching stencil skills to young people from Shepparton and surrounds. Big ups to all the crew who came along for the ride and also to Sean Bowen for generously donating his truck to be converted into a mobile artwork.

Underbelly brings together 4 young artists from Adelaide and Brisbane in an exhibition to be held at Brisbane’s most exciting commercial gallery, Ryan Renshaw Gallery.
Each of the artists has exhibited extensively locally and nationally and are carving out impressive and unique careers in the visual arts.

The exhibition is loosely themed around common approaches to those things in society that are often overlooked and situated on the darker side of sensibilities. Delinquents, outcasts, graffiti and self-inflicted perjury have become the inspiration for the creative outcomes of these emerging artists. In continuing the exploration of alternative subjects by these artists, their choice of disciplines are varied and mixed. Media and combinations of media including video, photography, painting and sculpture all appear in this exhibition.

LONDON CALLING

I visited London for a few days to be present work in the Cans Festival, an international exhibition of stencil artists.
The scale and line up of this show is huge including artists such as Civilian, Vexta, Prism, Kaagman, Sten, Roadsworth, Blek, Faile, M-City, Dolk, John Grider & Banksy - just to name a few.

BLUE DWELLING

Blue Dwelling is a large, site-specific installation work that is inspired by Japanese homeless dwellings and produced in direct reaction to a found environment within Adelaide’s abandoned Balfours pie factory. The work reflects my ongoing exploration into alternative uses of urban space.

This project is presented as a component of the Fringe festival’s Format event.
Format will bring together alternative formats for writing, information sharing and story telling in a celebration of contemporary alternative ways of writing that are high quality, well written and artistically clever.

DARWINISM

I am presenting a small solo exhibition of recent work featuring paintings and studies produced in response to specific and unique urban scrawl of Australia’s Top End region. ADELAIDE FESTIVAL LIVING WINDOW PROJECT

For a period of two and a half hours, I will listen only to the Mars Volta’s Cicatriz Esp 12 minute opus played loud and on repeat. Fuelling myself via excessive consumption of energy drinks, my aim is to reach a heightened state of frenetic creativity. I will attempt to create enough text and imagery in response to the epic track to compile an animated film clip.

I am currently involved with Carclew’s Artists in Schools program and will be working with kids at Kaurna Plains High School in Elizabeth. I am teaching skills in stencil making via weekly sessions during first term, with the final outcome being two murals within the school.

Adelaide's Helpmann Academy generously supports mentorship schemes between emerging and established artists. I have recently been appointed mentor to Logan MacDonald, a recent graduate of the South Australian School of Art, UniSA. During the next six months we will be working together towards a collaborative exhibition.
